Are you an artist, musician, designer, biohacker or another cultural practitioner with an interest in biology? Applications are now open to spend four to six weeks carrying out artistic work within our research group, the Molecular Environmental Microbiology Laboratory (CNB-CSIC) in Madrid, Spain.

The Artist in Residence programme is organised by Biofaction, together with three research projects funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme. We are a partner in one of those projects, MADONNA, which aims to implement new-to–nature (NTN) reactions that turn industrial waste into valuable resources. The other two European projects are SINFONIA and NEWCOTIANA.

Four chosen artists will spend a period of four to six weeks at one of the participating European laboratories, all working on cutting-edge Synthetic Biology research — in our case, genetic engineering of the soil bacterium Pseudomonas putida for biosensing and bioremediation. Each artist will receive a stipend of up to 7000 € to cover travel, local expenses, accommodation and partial support for the production and showcasing of the artistic work. The residency has a flexible start date, starting Autumn of 2020 and ending before May 2021.

Besides the residency at our own research group, MADONNA offers another one of the four placements at the Cronin Group, School of Chemistry, University of Glasgow (Scotland, UK). Researchers at this lab explore complex chemical systems: they attempt to build functional molecular architectures that are not based on biological building blocks and they study the assembly of artificial life in the lab.
